I’m 40. Now What?

July 15, 2008

I just hit level 40 with my main, Ravric the Captain of the Free Peoples.  It was in Evendim where this happy event happened.  It felt like a breath of fresh air.  It felt like I was now one of the big boys, but my journey was far from over.

For starters, a level 40 Captain gets the awesome ability to summon anybody from anywhere to the Captain.  This is really nice for times when I want to grind out a deed, and I ask the Kinship if anybody feels like coming.  I can just summon them to my side rather than wait for them to work their way through the horse travel system.

Ravric is about done with Evendim (until later Epic Book Quests and Annuminas dungeons), and I am making way to Trollshaws to delve into some wilderness.  With some great stuff coming in Book 14 and this recent advancement, I am have been more pumped than ever to play the first Volume of Lord of the Rings Online.

Der Ubermensch Kritzkrieg

July 3, 2008

I have been trying to slowly unlock the new weapons in Team Fortress 2.  I finally completed the 16 necessary achievements to get the Kritzkrieg.  My 16th Achievement was the Autopsy Report, which required me to “provide an enemy with a freezecam shot of [me] taunting above their ragdoll.”  It’s not really a difficult Achievement, but it required a few tries to get right.  The difficulty in the Achievement lies in the fact that the Medic is poor, offensively, and the Medic’s main offensive weapon is ranged.  So standing over a dead body you just killed might only happen one or two times a match.  Then you have to put yourself in a completely defenseless position (by taunting) and pray a soldier doesn’t come along and shoot you in the face mid-glove snap.

I got the Achievement at Capture Point A in Gravelpit, being on defense.  I was coming out of the tunnel between points A and B, and I saw a Spy.  I pulled out my Syringe Gun and started launching needles into him while he tried to run back to near the enemy entrance point A.  I mowed him down right near the outhouse structure, and I started doing the taunt.  About midway a scout and a soldier entered the main area, but thankfully ran the other way.  If they saw me, they were probably too stunned to see a Medic taunting right near their entrance point.  I nabbed the Achievement, and ran back around the other side of point A with a mere 23 health… getting right back into action.

Das Blutsauger

June 24, 2008

Last night I unlocked my first weapon advancement in Team Fortress 2: the Medic’s Blutsauger.  New weapons can be unlocked by doing achievements in game.  For instance, my tenth Medic achievement I completed last night to get the new weapon was Play Doctor.  To unlock this achievement “in a team with no Medics, be first to switch to Medic after a teammate calls medic and heal 500 health.”  I am pretty proud of my first Milestone achievement because they have only been gained through normal play (not the best way, but fun for me).

The Blutsauger replaces the Medic’s Syringe Gun; the difference being the Blutsauger gives the Medic +3 Health per hit but it cannot get critical hits.  I believe I am going to use the Blutsauger almost indefinitely because it greatly improves the Medic’s survivability.  The only time I will probably switch back to the Syringe Gun is when I plan on working on the Does It Hurt When I Do This? achievement (requiring me to kill 50 Scouts with the Syringe Gun).
